ReVisions
From the Curator
Anthony Fisher and I first met here in Provincetown forty years ago, and we've been close friends ever since. He is an important Provincetown artist that the Outer Cape has seen not enough of. Anthony's work is born of a restless and volatile spirit that does not accept comfortable and well-worn responses to painting's difficult and strange demands. Many works chosen for this exhibition were made using unconventional methods. Invented drawing/painting "machines", stencils cut through photo paper, and cut up remnants of rejected work are often layered into thickly troweled beds of paint. Fisher's novel processes can be seen in videos on his website: anthonyfisher.net. The paintings he finds are unlikely and often explo-sive, but others can have the hypnotic feel of a landscape, flowing water, or exotic marine botanicals. None of this work would have found its way into the world using traditional techniques. Anthony's restless nature and openness to pictorial adventures has led these paintings to places that they would not have otherwise gone. It is a great pleasure for me to bring these paintings to PAAM so that others can experience this remarkable work.
